Fantasy Variation - Counterattack 3...dxe4 & 4...e5!
The dynamic move that punishes the weakness of the h4-e1 diagonal
1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.f3 dxe4 4.fxe4 e5 5.Nf3 exd4 6.Bc4 Nf6 7.O-O Bc5
Move by move
- 1.e4 – White takes the center with the pawn and frees the Queen and the f1 Bishop. Against 1.e4 this course answers with the Caro-Kann, which prepares ...d5 without shutting in the c8 Bishop.
- 1...c6 – Caro-Kann Defense: the c6 pawn prepares ...d5 and supports it. Unlike the French, the c8 Bishop's diagonal stays open: it can come out to f5 or g4 before ...e6.
- 2.d4 – White builds the e4-d4 center: Black has not attacked it yet and White gains space.
- 2...d5 – Black attacks e4 with the support of the c6 pawn: after exd5 it will recapture cxd5, keeping a pawn in the center. White chooses between e5, Nc3, exd5 and f3.
- 3.f3 – Fantasy Variation: White defends e4 with the f-pawn to maintain the e4-d4 center; in return it weakens the e1-h4 diagonal and takes f3 away from the Knight.
- 3...dxe4 – Black trades on e4: after fxe4 White has the center, but its King and the e1-h4 diagonal are weakened.
- 4.fxe4 – White recaptures and holds the e4-d4 center, with the f-file half-open.
- 4...e5 – Immediate counterattack on d4: if 5.dxe5, ...Qxd1+ trades the Queens and the white King loses castling.
- 5.Nf3 – White develops and offers the d4 pawn to speed up development.
- 5...exd4 – Black accepts the pawn: now it has an extra pawn, but must be careful about the diagonal toward f7.
- 6.Bc4 – The Bishop aims at f7, Black's weak point, and prepares castling with the f-file half-open.
- 6...Nf6 – The Knight develops, attacks e4 and prepares castling.
- 7.O-O – White castles: the f1 Rook on the half-open f-file aims at f6 and f7.
- 7...Bc5 – The Bishop defends d4 and prepares castling; from the a7-g1 diagonal it keeps an eye on the white King.
How to exploit the position
Black has an extra pawn (d4) and good development; White has the center with e4, the f-file and the Bishop aimed at f7 as compensation.
- Castle at once with ...O-O: the King leaves the f7 diagonal and the f6 Knight is no longer the only defender.
- Against e5 the Knight goes to g4 or d5, from where it attacks e3 or stays central.
- ...Nbd7 and ...Nb6 drive the c4 Bishop off the diagonal toward f7.
- Defend the d4 pawn with the c5 Bishop and give it back only if White opens dangerous lines against your King.
Master tips
The f7 point in the Fantasy
After 6.Bc4 the Bishop and the f1 Rook aim at f7: Black must castle early and not leave the f6 Knight without support.
