Move by move
- 1.e4 – The initial king's pawn push opens diagonal pathways for both the queen and the dark-squared bishop, staking an immediate claim in the center on e4.
- 1...e5 – Black’s classical symmetrical reply: occupies central space on e5, prevents further white expansion with e4, and unlocks diagonals for pieces.
- 2.Nf3 – Classical development with a direct threat: the knight attacks the undefended e5-pawn while initiating rapid mobilization toward kingside castling.
- 2...Nc6 – The most natural and solid defense: the knight protects the e5-pawn, controls the d4 and b4 squares, and develops a minor piece into the fray.
- 3.Nc3 – The Three Knights Game: White brings out the second knight, fortifying e4 and preparing to fight for asymmetric central control with a future d4.
- 3...Nf6 – The Four Knights Game! Black develops their final knight, counter-attacking e4 and establishing a position of complete and harmonious symmetry.
- 4.Nxe5 – The legendary Halloween Gambit! White audaciously sacrifices a whole knight on move 4 to unleash an unstoppable central pawn steamroller.
- 4...Nxe5 – Black accepts the sacrifice by taking the knight with their c6-knight, but suddenly finds all minor pieces lacking stable central homes.
- 5.d4 – The central avalanche begins! White pushes d4 seizing the heart of the board with gain of tempo against the recently deployed e5-knight.
- 5...Nc6 – The black knight retreats dismally to c6 seeking refuge, but hands White a second developmental tempo to drive the pawns forward.
- 6.d5 – Second blow of the avalanche! The d5-pawn advances relentlessly, evicting the second black knight and completely suffocating the enemy ranks.
- 6...Ne5 – The black knight must hop back to e5 seeking temporary shelter, but instantly falls prey to White’s next aggressive central pawn thrust.
- 7.f4 – Third consecutive push! White thrusts the f-pawn forward with vigor, pitilessly chasing the e5-knight and widening the central pawn wall.
- 7...Ng6 – The knight retreats to g6 seeking escape, but leaves its comrade on f6 utterly stranded and vulnerable to White’s final crushing pawn push.
- 8.e5 – The central coup de grâce! The e5 thrust overruns Black's last knight, tearing open devastating highways toward the king trapped in the center.
