- 2...g6 – The signature move of the King's Indian: Black prepares the fianchetto of the Bishop on g7 to target the center from afar.
- 3.Nc3 – White develops the Knight toward the center: it protects d5 and prepares full central conquest with e2-e4.
- 3...Bg7 – The Bishop takes position on the long h8-a1 diagonal: it controls the central d4 and e5 light squares and shields the King.
- 4.e4 – White sets up the classical center with the d4 and e4 pawns: it controls plenty of space but provides a clear target for Black's counterplay.

- 8.Bd3 – The Bishop develops actively along the d3-h7 diagonal, supporting both the center and kingside.
- 8...cxd5 – Black captures on d5 to open the c-file for knight and rook maneuvering.
- 9.cxd5 – White recaptures with the c-pawn, keeping the d5 wedge and freeing the c3 square.
How to exploit the position
The central structure is fixed: White controls d5 but spent tempi on h3 and Be3. Black has opened the c-file and enjoys fine maneuvering prospects for the knights.
- Develop the b8 Knight to a6 to head for c5, targeting the d3 Bishop and e4 pawn.
- Push ...a6 and ...b5 to gain space on the queenside and dislodge White's defenders.
- Maneuver the f6 Knight to h5 or d7 to prepare the thematic ...f5 break on the kingside.
- Bring the Queen to a5 or b6 to apply pressure along the semi-open c-file and against d5.
