6. Anti-London with 2...Bf5: Central Strike c4 and Qb3

Black tries to mirror White's setup with 2...Bf5. White shifts gears immediately: abandons the closed pyramid and unleashes a ferocious central offensive with c2-c4, Nc3, and Qb3, punishing the newly weakened b7 square.

Move by move

  1. 1.d4 – The 1.d4 push claims central space and the key e5 square, clearing pathways for the Queen and dark-squared Bishop.
  2. 1...d5 – Black replies symmetrically with 1...d5, staking out central territory and preventing White's immediate 2.e4 advance.
  3. 2.Bf4 – The signature London Bishop: developed actively outside the future pawn chain, commanding the c1-h6 diagonal.
  4. 2...Nf6 – Black develops the Knight toward the center, contesting d5 and e4 while preparing harmonious kingside castling.
  5. 3.e3 – The keystone of the London System: reinforces d4 and clears the way for the light-squared Bishop to develop to d3.
  6. 3...Bf5 – Black mirrors White by developing the Bishop to f5: however, this leaves the b7 pawn undefended and vulnerable.
  7. 4.c4 – White shifts gears with c2-c4: directly undermines Black's center and exploits the weakness created by ...Bf5.
  8. 4...e6 – Black bolsters d5 with ...e6, building a solid wall but closing the retreat path for the f5 Bishop.
  9. 5.Qb3 – Deadly Queen sortie: Qb3 creates an immediate double attack targeting undefended b7 and central d5 simultaneously.
  10. 5...Qc8 – Black's Queen is forced into a passive post on c8 to defend b7, resulting in severe disharmony across Black's ranks.
  11. 6.Nc3 – White develops the Knight to c3, intensifying central pressure against d5 and preparing the c4-c5 space-gaining thrust.

How to exploit the position

Seize the initiative on the Queenside by targeting the vacancy left by Black's c8 Bishop.

Master tips

Punish Black's premature ...Bf5 sortie

If Black copies with 2...Bf5, the b7 square is left undefended: Qb3 is the immediate refutation.
