Move by move

  1. 1.d4 – White opens with 1.d4, occupying the center with the queen's pawn and establishing a classical, solid positional foundation.
  2. 1...g6 – The signature entry to the Modern Defense! With 1...g6 you prepare a swift bishop fianchetto without committing your knights.
  3. 2.c4 – White pushes 2.c4, establishing the traditional Queen's Gambit spatial grip to seize territory and clamp down on the center.
  4. 2...Bg7 – You plant your Bishop on g7: your star piece points directly at White's d4 pawn along the entire long dark-squared diagonal.
  5. 3.Nc3 – White develops the Knight to c3 to secure central control over d5 and e4, reinforcing a broad and ambitious central pawn mass.
  6. 3...d6 – Flexible control with 3...d6: you seize command of the key e5 square and keep both central breaks and flank expansions open.
  7. 4.e4 – White pushes 4.e4, erecting an imposing three-pawn center designed to squeeze your position and restrict piece mobility.
  8. 4...e5 – A lethal central counterstrike with 4...e5! You challenge the head of White's pawn phalanx before White can fully consolidate.
  9. 5.Nf3 – White develops the Knight to f3, shoring up the central d4 pawn and smoothly proceeding with kingside minor piece mobilization.
  10. 5...Nd7 – You develop the Knight to d7: shoring up the e5 outpost while keeping the long diagonal completely clear for the g7 Bishop.
  11. 6.Be2 – White develops the Bishop to e2 in modest fashion, preparing kingside castling safely without presenting any early targets.
  12. 6...Ne7 – You develop the second Knight to e7: a harmonious post that leaves the g7 diagonal open and prepares the liberating f5 break.
  13. 7.O-O – White tucks the King away safely with kingside castling, completing basic deployment and connecting the kingside rook to the center.
  14. 7...O-O – Your King also finds complete sanctuary with kingside castling: Black's fortress is rock-solid and primed for a flank assault.
  15. 8.Be3 – White develops the Bishop to e3, reinforcing the central pawn chain and completing the mobilization of all minor pieces in the center.
  16. 8...h6 – An essential prophylactic move with 8...h6: taking the g5 square from White and preparing the king unpin Kh7 followed by f5.
  17. 9.Qd2 – The white Queen rises to d2, forming a battery with the e3 Bishop to target your slightly advanced h6 pawn on the kingside.
  18. 9...Kh7 – You step the King calmly to h7, shielding the h6 pawn with supreme elegance while preparing the explosive central break with f5.
