Move by move
- 1.e4 – White opens with the classical 1.e4, staking a claim in the center and freeing diagonals for both the f1 bishop and the queen.
- 1...g6 – The Modern Defense! With 1...g6 you delay defining the center and developing the Knight, preparing the Bishop fianchetto on g7.
- 2.d4 – White seizes the opportunity to occupy the entire center with pawns on e4 and d4, establishing a broad territorial dominance.
- 2...Bg7 – You place the Bishop on g7, aiming directly at the undefended d4 pawn along the entire long dark-squared diagonal with great pressure.
- 3.Nc3 – White develops the Knight to c3, defending the vulnerable e4 pawn and reinforcing control over key central squares like d5 and e4.
- 3...c6 – The Gurgenidze System begins with 3...c6: you prepare an immediate d5 push to contest White's center without wasting time.
- 4.f4 – White plays aggressively with 4.f4 to form an imposing three-pawn front, but leaves numerous structural holes for your counterattack.
- 4...d5 – A mighty central blow with 4...d5! You transform the game into a rock-solid Caro-Kann structure with a pre-installed g7 Bishop.
- 5.e5 – White advances 5.e5 to close the center and gain kingside territory, hoping to organize a future assault against your castled King.
- 5...h5 – A sublime prophylactic move with 5...h5! You permanently stop White's g4 push, fix the pawn structure, and create the f5 outpost.
- 6.Nf3 – White develops the Knight to f3 to reinforce their center, but can no longer advance aggressively on the kingside due to your clamp.
- 6...Nh6 – A thematic Knight maneuver to h6! From this square the Knight will re-route to the unshakeable f5 outpost, dominating the position.
- 7.Be3 – White develops the Bishop to e3, attempting to control the d4 square and support the sturdy base of their central pawn chain.
- 7...Bg4 – You pin the f3 Knight with 7...Bg4: aiming to remove the chief defender of White's center with surgical precision and speed.
- 8.h3 – White questions your Bishop with 8.h3, hoping to force a retreat, but this walks directly into Black's strategic masterplan.
- 8...Bxf3 – You trade favorably on f3 with 8...Bxf3: eliminating White's best-placed piece and opening the gateway for your Knight's invasion.
- 9.Qxf3 – The white Queen recaptures on f3, but finds herself awkwardly placed in the center without any concrete targets to harass.
- 9...Nf5 – The Knight lands triumphantly on the powerful f5 outpost! It attacks the e3 Bishop, dominates the center, and cannot be dislodged.
- 10.Bf2 – White's Bishop is forced to retreat to f2 to avoid being traded off, leaving Black in complete command of the key central dark squares.
- 10...h4 – You seal the kingside permanently with 10...h4! Freezing all white pawns on that wing and completing an impenetrable fortress.
- 11.Bd3 – White's Bishop develops to d3 to contest your f5 Knight, but Black's overall setup remains granite-solid and fully secure.
- 11...e6 – You lock the pawn chain with the sturdy 11...e6: building a granite wall that defends f5 and leaves Black completely weakness-free.
- 12.O-O – White castles kingside, but is left with a passive, static position devoid of any active breakthroughs against your fortress.
- 12...Nd7 – You develop the Knight to d7, connecting Rooks and completing a textbook Gurgenidze deployment with a superior, risk-free middlegame.
How to exploit the position

- Seal the kingside with the prophylactic h5 push, denying White the g4 thrust
- Route the Knight via h6 to claim the dominant, untouchable f5 outpost
- Pin and eliminate the f3 Knight to remove White's primary central anchor
- Lock the pawn structure with e6, constructing an impenetrable fortress
