14. Modern Variation with 5.Qe2: Dynamic Exit 7...Bf5

Move by move

  1. 1.e4 – White opens with the classical 1.e4, controlling d5 and f5 and freeing diagonals for both the f1 bishop and the queen to begin an open game.
  2. 1...e5 – You respond symmetrically with 1...e5: staking your claim in the center, preventing d4, and opening paths for your own pieces.
  3. 2.Nf3 – White develops the king's knight toward the center, attacking your e5 pawn and preparing rapid kingside castling in two moves.
  4. 2...Nf6 – The Petrov Defense! With 2...Nf6 you disregard White's attack on e5 and launch a symmetrical counterstrike against their e4 pawn.
  5. 3.Nxe5 – White captures your central e5 pawn with the knight, hoping for an immediate advantage or tempting you into a tactical blunder.
  6. 3...d6 – The essential golden move! With 3...d6 you kick White's knight first, ensuring you can recapture on e4 in complete safety next turn.
  7. 4.Nf3 – White's knight is forced to retreat to f3, losing its gained tempo and allowing you to re-establish total material balance.
  8. 4...Nxe4 – You restore material balance with 4...Nxe4: your knight takes up a commanding post on the central e4 outpost with fine prospects.
  9. 5.Qe2 – The Queen Variation 5.Qe2: White pins your e4 knight along the e-file, hoping to provoke early concessions in the center.
  10. 5...Qe7 – Flawless counter-pin with 5...Qe7: neutralizing every tactical trick, shielding the knight, and preparing an advantageous queen trade.
  11. 6.Nc3 – White develops the knight to c3 challenging your e4 knight and avoiding a peaceful queen trade on the open board of play.
  12. 6...Nxc3 – You trade on c3 with 6...Nxc3: degrading White's pawn structure by inflicting doubled and weak pawns along their c-file.
  13. 7.dxc3 – White recaptures with the d-pawn, opening the diagonal for their c1 bishop and clearing the entire d-file for their queen.
  14. 7...Bf5 – You develop the bishop to f5 with tempo against c2: commanding the active diagonal and securing splendid dynamic equality.
