14. Norwegian Defense 2...Nf6 & 3...d5 (Inverted Pirc)
A popular surprise line in Scandinavia: after 1.e4 g6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3, Black breaks in the center with 3...d5! If White pushes 4.e5, the knight leaps to the dominant e4 outpost. Following the 5.Nxe4 dxe4 exchange, Black plants a crippling pawn wedge.
1.e4 g6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 d5 4.e5 Ne4 5.Nxe4 dxe4
Move by move
- 1.e4 – White opens with the classical 1.e4, staking a claim in the center and freeing diagonals for both the f1 bishop and the queen.
- 1...g6 – The Modern Defense! With 1...g6 you delay defining the center and developing the Knight, preparing the Bishop fianchetto on g7.
- 2.d4 – White seizes the opportunity to occupy the entire center with pawns on e4 and d4, establishing a broad territorial dominance.
- 2...Nf6 – The Norwegian Defense: you surprise White with 2...Nf6, baiting pawns forward to strike back aggressively at the overextended center.
- 3.Nc3 – White defends the e4 pawn with 3.Nc3, seeking to maintain spatial control without biting on Black's tactical provocation.
- 3...d5 – A sharp central break with 3...d5! You strike directly at the core of White's pawn formation to force immediate open-board combat.
- 4.e5 – White pushes 4.e5 to kick your Knight and grab space, but immediately gifts you the magnificent central outpost square on e4.
- 4...Ne4 – The Knight leaps triumphantly into the e4 outpost! It establishes a deeply uncomfortable thorn in the very heart of White's camp.
- 5.Nxe4 – White accepts the Knight exchange on e4 to remove the annoying intruder, but opens lines and diagonals to your clear advantage.
- 5...dxe4 – You recapture with 5...dxe4: establishing a cramping pawn wedge on e4 that cripples White's development and gives you total control.
How to exploit the position
Catch White off guard with the immediate central break 3...d5
- Station the knight on the glorious e4 outpost if White advances 4.e5
- Accept the trade on e4 to install a paralyzing central pawn wedge on e4
- Develop the mighty bishop to g7 to command the long diagonal uncontested
- Castle kingside and mobilize heavy pieces to rule the open middlegame
