Move by move
- 1.e4 – White opens with the classical 1.e4, staking a claim in the center and freeing diagonals for both the f1 bishop and the queen.
- 1...d6 – You respond with the hypermodern 1...d6: flexible and understated, controlling e5 while waiting to see White's chosen setup.
- 2.d4 – White seizes the full classical pawn center with 2.d4, claiming wide central territory on d4 and e4 with complete freedom.
- 2...Nf6 – You develop the knight to f6, putting immediate pressure on White's unprotected e4 pawn and compelling a defensive response.
- 3.Nc3 – White defends the e4 pawn by developing the knight to its natural post on c3, reinforcing their central foundation securely.
- 3...g6 – The trademark move of the Pirc Defense! You prepare to fianchetto your bishop to g7 to put long-range pressure on White's center.
- 4.f4 – The Austrian Attack: White's sharpest, most aggressive try. They erect a massive three-pawn steamroller with f4, e4, and d4.
- 4...Bg7 – You plant your bishop on g7, aiming like a laser beam straight into the heart of White's pawn center along the a1-h8 diagonal.
- 5.Nf3 – White develops the king's knight to f3, shoring up their broad pawn center and preparing kingside castling in standard fashion.
- 5...O-O – You tuck your king into safety with kingside castling, fully primed to strike back aggressively against White's overextended pawns.
- 6.Bd3 – White develops the bishop to d3, buttressing the e4 pawn and pointing ominously toward your kingside in aggressive posture.
- 6...c5 – The thematic detonator 6...c5! You blast at White's central foundation on d4 before they can consolidate with an e5 thrust.
- 7.dxc5 – White trades on c5 hoping to diffuse central tension, but this opens crucial highways and diagonals for your major pieces.
- 7...Qa5 – Your queen lunges to a5, pinning White's c3 knight! You threaten to recapture on c5 or e4 with powerful attacking momentum.
