56. Cozio Defence: Classical Breakthrough 4.d4
Against the Cozio, opening at once with 4.d4 exd4 5.Nxd4 g6 6.Be3 Bg7 7.Nc3 O-O 8.Qd2 gives White an overwhelming development in the style of the Yugoslav Attack.

Move by move
- 1.e4 – White takes the centre and opens the diagonals for the queen and the f1-bishop. In the Ruy Lopez this pawn will often be at the heart of the fight: Black will attack it with ...Nf6 and, in the Open Variation, will even capture it with ...Nxe4.
- 1...e5 – Black answers symmetrically: it contests d4 and f4, prevents e4-e5 and frees the f8-bishop. From here White will build the whole Ruy Lopez on pressure against this pawn.
- 2.Nf3 – Develops the knight with a direct attack on the e5 pawn, which now has to be defended. The knight also prepares kingside castling and supports a future d2-d4 push.
- 2...Nc6 – Defends e5 while developing a piece and controlling d4. This very knight, the only defender of e5, will be the target of White's next move.
- 3.Bb5 – The Ruy Lopez: the bishop attacks the c6-knight, the defender of e5. There is no immediate threat yet (Bxc6 dxc6 Nxe5 Qd4 regains the pawn), but the pressure on c6 will last throughout the opening.
- 3...Nge7 – The Cozio Defence: the knight goes to e7 to support c6, but it blocks the f8-bishop.
- 4.d4 – Opens the centre at once: the e7-knight does not control d4 and Black is behind in development.
- 4...exd4 – Against 4.d4 Black captures: with the knight on e7 it cannot hold e5 with ...d6 without shutting itself in.
- 5.Nxd4 – The knight recaptures on d4 and centralises, while Black still has to develop the kingside.
- 5...g6 – Black prepares the fianchetto to develop the f8-bishop.
- 6.Be3 – Develops the bishop and defends the d4-knight against the pressure of the future g7-bishop.
- 6...Bg7 – The bishop goes to g7 and presses on the long diagonal towards d4 and b2.
- 7.Nc3 – With the bishop already on e3 the knight goes to c3: it defends e4 and prepares Qd2 and queenside castling.
- 7...O-O – Black castles behind the g7-bishop: now Qd2 and Bh6 aim precisely at that bishop.
- 8.Qd2 – The queen forms a battery with the e3-bishop and prepares Bh6 to exchange the g7-bishop and queenside castling.
How to exploit the position
White has more space and comfortable development; Black is solid but passive.
- Play Bh6 to exchange the g7-bishop, the black king's best defender.
- Castle queenside and push h4-h5 to open the h-file.
- Against ...d5 or ...Nxd4 recapture keeping control of the centre.
- Keep the b5-bishop active: Bxc6 is played only when it leaves Black with a weak structure.
Master tips
Accelerated development against passivity
After 4.d4 exd4 5.Nxd4, Black has no active pieces. Develop Be3, Nc3 and Qd2, preparing O-O-O and the kingside assault with h4-h5.
