Scandinavian Defense

5. Gubinsky-Melts Variation: Provocative 3...Qe5+ Check

A clever surprise line: with 3...Qe5+ Black forces 4.Be2, then relocates the queen to the ideal c7 square after c6 and Nf3, leaving White's bishop passive on e2 and ruling the central highways.

Move by move

  1. 1.e4 – White opens with the classical central pawn push, occupying e4 and freeing paths for the light-squared bishop and queen.
  2. 1...d5 – The Scandinavian Defense! With 1...d5 you instantly challenge White's e4 pawn, seizing the initiative and dictating terms.
  3. 2.exd5 – White captures in the center opening the e-file, accepting the challenge on d5 and inviting your queen out into the open board.
  4. 2...Qxd5 – Classical queen recapture: you restore material balance immediately, centralize the queen, and exert active central pressure.
  5. 3.Nc3 – White develops the knight attacking your centralized queen on d5, aiming to gain a tempo to accelerate queenside mobilization.
  6. 3...Qe5+ – The Gubinsky-Melts provocation! You deliver check with 3...Qe5+, forcing a passive block before relocating your queen safely.
  7. 4.Be2 – White is forced to interpose with 4.Be2 to parry the check, temporarily blocking the e-file and hindering queen activity.
  8. 4...c6 – With c6 you prepare the ideal home for your queen on c7, simultaneously denying White knight the central d5 jumping square.
  9. 5.Nf3 – White develops the knight to f3 attacking your e5 queen, hoping to gain a developmental tempo to catch up in piece activity.
  10. 5...Qc7 – The queen drops back to the perfect c7 outpost: controls the c-file, monitors e5, and sits in absolute comfort and safety.
  11. 6.d4 – White pushes d4 to establish the classical pawn center and liberate active diagonal pathways for the dark-squared bishop.
  12. 6...Nf6 – You develop the knight to f6 toward the center, guarding d5 and e4 and preparing the smooth deployment of the bishop to f5.
  13. 7.O-O – White castles kingside for king safety, but the bishop on e2 remains passive and devoid of genuine offensive bite against you.
  14. 7...Bf5 – You plant the bishop on key square f5 with tempo on c2, completing a bulletproof setup ready for active central counterplay.
