15. Portuguese Gambit: Positional Approach Against 4.Be2

If White chooses the cautious 4.Be2 instead of f3, Black trades bishops on e2, recaptures the central pawn with 5...Qxd5!, and builds an ideal setup with Nc6 and e6, outclassing White in piece activity.

Move by move

  1. 1.e4 – White opens with the classical central pawn push, occupying e4 and freeing paths for the light-squared bishop and queen.
  2. 1...d5 – The Scandinavian Defense! With 1...d5 you instantly challenge White's e4 pawn, seizing the initiative and dictating terms.
  3. 2.exd5 – White captures in the center opening the e-file, accepting the challenge on d5 and inviting your queen out into the open board.
  4. 2...Nf6 – The modern 2...Nf6 variation: you avoid exposing your queen early, develop a minor piece toward the center, and prepare to recapture d5.
  5. 3.d4 – White occupies the center with d4 and unblocks the c1 bishop, either conceding the d5 pawn or preparing to fortify it actively.
  6. 3...Bg4 – The Portuguese Gambit! With 3...Bg4 you immediately pin White's kingside and sacrifice the d5 pawn for lightning-fast piece mobilization.
  7. 4.Be2 – White opts for the quiet 4.Be2 declining the wild Portuguese complications, offering a trade of dark-squared bishops to simplify.
  8. 4...Bxe2 – You trade favorably on e2: stripping White of their defensive bishop and preparing to recapture the central pawn with your queen in safety.
  9. 5.Qxe2 – White's queen recaptures on e2 to avoid losing castling rights, but lines up on the same file as the king and abandons d5.
  10. 5...Qxd5 – You recapture the central pawn with 5...Qxd5! Without White's dark-squared bishop on the board, your centralized queen is untouchable.
  11. 6.Nf3 – White develops the knight to f3 to guard d4 and prepare castling, trying to catch up in development against your active army.
  12. 6...e6 – You reinforce the center with e6: building a rock-solid pawn wedge and freeing the f8 bishop to prepare rapid kingside castling.
  13. 7.O-O – White castles kingside to tuck the king away, but your central command and piece activity ensure complete equality and easy play.
  14. 7...Nc6 – You develop the knight to c6 putting immediate heat on d4: completing seamless piece mobilization with dynamic, active prospects.
